Stephen Knapp – an artist behind light paintings term – had created artworks with just refracted white light and glass. The artist uses dichroic glass that’s treated with layers of metallic coating, to act as a selective prism; and separate focused light into different frequencies of the spectrum. In essence, he separates white light into a dazzling array of colors.

The installations are not sketched out beforehand or programmed by computer, but rather created during the installation process as Knapp moves intuitively to choreograph his intricate light patterns.

“The fact that what I create can just be done with light, that there is no paint on these panels, is absolutely astounding to people. What I am trying to do most of all here is challenge any traditional notion of perception. What is it? Is it real? Is it not real? Does it matter?” – Stephen Knapp

Called a new art medium of the 21st century, lightpaintings are the result of Knapp’s skill at cutting, shaping and polishing the glass. His works are beautifully abstract, standing at the intersection between painting, sculpture, and architecture.
