Lighting the Olympic Games: How will it shape Paris 2024?
Lighting the Olympic Games has always played a pivotal role in the spectacle and its spirit, shaping the atmosphere of venues and enhancing the experiences of athletes and spectators alike. From dazzling ceremonies to intense competitions, the right lighting sets the stage for unforgettable moments. The mesmerising glow of the Beijing 2008 swimming pool, illuminated by cutting-edge LED technology, exemplified this as swimmers shattered records and captivated the world.

As we look ahead to the Paris 2024 Olympics, the legacy of innovative lighting solutions continues to illuminate the path towards excellence and inspiration.
Indeed, this summer, the iconic ‘City of Lights‘ will host the XXXIII Olympiad, promising a spectacular celebration of unity and sportsmanship. However, spotlight isn’t just shining on the athletes and competitions, but also on the transformative power of lighting design. Therein, we delve into the fascinating world of illuminating excellence, exploring how lighting will play a central role in shaping the atmosphere, sustainability, and legacy of the Paris 2024 Games.
The Lighting Vision of Paris 2024
In the grand tapestry of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, from lighting up the new purple track at the Stade de France, or to enhance the various events accompanying the competition, lighting emerges as a key feature of these Olympics, reflecting the very spirit of the Games.
Paris 2024’s lighting vision extends beyond the stadiums to envelop the entire country, transforming it into a vibrant spectacle of light and color. Through cutting-edge technology and artistic expression, the Games push boundaries, offering immersive experiences for all. Inclusivity is paramount, with accessible features that ensure everyone can share in the magic of the event next summer.

A Magnificent Light Show
Just as the Olympic flame symbolizes the spirit of the Olympics, lighting serves as its radiant counterpart. At the heart of this spectacle is the Opening Ceremony, where spectacular lighting will orchestrate a breathtaking display of creativity and innovation, breaking the codes of sporting competition by bringing Sport into the city. Illuminating bridges and quays of the Seine River, all under the gaze of the glittering Iron Lady.

The arrival of the Olympic Flame in Marseille marked the start of this lighting journey with a choreography of 800 drones and fireworks, recreating Olympic symbols, historical moments, the Paris 2024 logo, and the Belem, the ship that carried the flame from Greece.
The capital and host city have also adorned themselves for the Games, with landmarks like the Hôtel de Ville of Paris transformed into vibrant, living canvases. This captivating trend will extend to other iconic sites, including the Hôtel des Invalides and the Grand Palais.
Sustainability and Innovation
The lighting strategy for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games not only emphasizes aesthetic appeal but also embodies a commitment to sustainability and innovation.
The Games aim to preserve the natural balance and minimize their impact on the environment throughout innovative solutions such as a Trame Noire and a biodiversity strategy: The case of the Olympic Village, which benefits from the renaturation of public spaces by introducing light-free areas to avoid any direct disturbance of small nocturnal fauna, while improving visitors comfort.

The Aquatic Centre for the Paris 2024 Olympics stands out as a beacon of innovation and sustainability. Its distinctive concave wooden roof, featuring France’s largest photovoltaic farm on a public building, underscores its environmental commitment. Inside, strategically placed skylights flood the space with natural light, creating a tranquil atmosphere.
By blending indoor and outdoor spaces, the design fosters inclusivity and community engagement. With energy-efficient LED luminaires and dynamic lighting controls, the centre sets a new standard for eco-conscious design while delivering a visually captivating experience.

Finally, we must mention the Adidas Arena at Porte de la Chapelle—one of the new landmarks for the Games—distinguished by its sustainable and innovative lighting design. A standout feature is its high-gloss aluminium façade, which reflects natural light to illuminate terraces and walkways.
Large windows further maximise natural light, enhancing efficiency by using minimal lighting elements for maximum impact—an approach adopted across various venues to reduce carbon emissions from infrastructure.

A Lighting Legacy
In summary, lighting will be pivotal in shaping the Paris 2024 Olympics. From illuminating venues to creating immersive experiences, it will capture the essence of the Games, fostering unity and innovation. Paris 2024’s commitment to sustainable lighting reflects its broader environmental goals. As everyone assembles in the “City of Light” to commemorate the greatest sporting accomplishments, let’s not forget the brilliant legacy of Paris 2024, where light genuinely shines as a beacon of unity, inspiration and innovation.
