Horticulture light, is it bad or good for human future?

Horticulture lighting, vertical farming, continuous production whatever the season, are presented as the “best” solutions to farmers’ issues against flooding, drought, climate change externalities. It’s also a way to produce more and to secure the economic growth and development of countries.

Ines MARJANOVIC – Agronomy expert, says that “artificial light is a revolutionary scientific farm practice”.

However, does artificial light applied to agriculture is truly sustainable?

Should we replace the sunlight by artificial light for plants?

What is the impact of this “modern” agriculture performed daytime and nighttime, 365 days a year, on plants growth and health?

What about the electrical consumption variations?

Could plants sustain such a production rhythm to feed 10 billions humans in 2050?

Would this agriculture still need the use of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides or GMOs?

Is Horticulture lighting ethic? Is it respecting trees, plants and their life cycles? What about the nature rights? Could plants produce continuously without darkness?

According to recent scientific researches and to Peter WOHLLEBEN – German forester on “La Vie secrète des arbres”, flora is organized as human community, sharing, helping each other. Are trees suffering? Are plants happy or unhappy?

Seemly, modern agriculture is promoted as solutions so far, which raises several questions and could likely generate further negative externalities.
