Press view: Namia River Retreat has been named one of the World’s Most Beautiful Hotels 2025 by Prix Versailles
In the Namia River Retreat, nestled on a quiet islet along Hoi An’s Thu Bồn River, we embraced this philosophy to create a regenerative, sensorial journey that aligns with nature’s rhythm. As the lighting consultant for the project, recently featured in Prix Versailles, our approach was guided by a singular purpose: to elevate the wellness experience by reconnecting guests with the authentic interplay between light and darkness.
A Lighting Concept Rooted in Nature’s Rhythm
Namia is more than a destination; it is a sanctuary where traditional Vietnamese therapies, daily rituals, and vernacular architecture offer deep rest and renewal. Designed by T3 Architects, the timber-framed villas stand gracefully on stilts, embracing native flora and wildlife. Our lighting design had to match that integrity, quiet, intentional, and deeply respectful of the land’s heritage.
Our lighting philosophy for Namia is structured around three foundational strategies: Natural Daylight, Natural Darkness, and Subtle Artificial Illumination. Each of these layers contributes to the guest’s inner reset, guided by the slow arc of the sun and the soft descent of night.
1. Daylight as a Living Artwork
During the day, we sought to reintroduce sunlight not as a utility, but as a living, evolving artwork. Our lighting design encourages guests to nourish themselves with natural light, its warmth, its movement, and its interaction with the materials and flora around them.
Sunlight is carefully guided through openings to animate handcrafted surfaces, Hoi An’s native wood, woven fabrics, and traditional paintings, casting shifting shadows and radiant hues. Curtains are left slightly open at dawn, allowing morning rays to gently enter the room, creating a quiet moment of awakening. These interactions become poetic rituals, subtle cues that elevate consciousness and invite guests to be present.
2. Night as a Sacred Experience
Nightfall at Namia is not a time for brightness, but for rediscovery. In a world increasingly saturated with artificial illumination, we intentionally preserved the natural darkness. Darkness becomes a design element, not an absence, fostering mental stillness and preparing the body for restorative sleep.
We defined “dark conservation zones” across the landscape, allowing moonlight and night air to enter spaces with discretion. Even curtains at night remain partially open, encouraging a gentle experience of penumbra, the nuanced light between dusk and dark. This philosophy echoes the ancient wisdom of night baths and lunar therapies, where silence, space, and shadow create room for regeneration.
3. Artificial Light: Subtle, Purposeful, and Local
Where artificial light is necessary, we approached it with restraint. Invisible by design, artificial lighting is integrated discreetly, guided by principles of biomimicry and minimal visual intrusion. 80% of fixtures are downward-oriented to preserve the night sky and minimize disruption to native wildlife.
Fixtures are crafted locally, using Vietnamese materials whenever possible, woven textures, bamboo elements, and artisanal finishes that blend into Namia’s architectural language. Lighting is programmed to dim gradually as the night deepens, following a choreographed sequence that respects the body’s circadian rhythm and reduces energy consumption.
We also moved away from a complete reliance on LEDs. Instead, we selected diverse, qualitative light sources that are more sustainable and responsible, aligning with Namia’s low-carbon, holistic ethos.
Lighting as a Path to Well-being
Namia River Retreat redefines luxury as a return to slowness, presence, and nature. Through our lighting concept, we created a place where light and night are no longer functional opposites, but harmonious parts of the wellness journey.
For us at kobi lighting studio, this project exemplifies how thoughtful illumination can reset not just space, but the human spirit. In embracing natural cycles, in sculpting moments with care, and in restoring respect for darkness, we hope to offer each guest not just a retreat, but a reconnection with themselves, with light, and with the land.
Our deepest thanks to our partners T3 ARCHITECTS, KANOPEA ARCHITECTURE STUDIO, LJ-Group, LifeStyleconnected, CORRETTO Atelier of Lights, for their trust and collaboration.

In response to the chaos of the world today, Namia River Retreat is nestled within a fishing village on a quiet islet along the labyrinthine Thu Bồn River. Here, traditional Vietnamese herbal therapies and daily wellness rituals honour the rhythms of the body and the land, reminiscent of the grace and heart of the hydrotherapy treatments that were so popular in the 19th century. The spirit and architectural soul of the place, designed by T3 Architects, are inscribed in the timber-framed villas on stilts that preserve native plantlife and wildlife. Every detail, from hand-crafted décor to herbal gardens, tells a story of resilience, beauty, and local wisdom.”
