Lighting the Way: Guiding Promising Designers Through Real-World Projects at Hoa Sen University to Shape the Future of Lighting Design
At kobi lighting studio, our mission is to share the true value of light as a design element, and as a transformative force for human well-being and social impact. This belief recently took shape through an inspiring collaboration with Hoa Sen University, where our Founder and Creative Director, Jonathan Trouillon, served as an instructor for a group of interior design students.
The Mentorship Journey of kobi lighting studio’s Founder for Hoa Sen Interior Design Students
Over the course of four months, Jonathan mentored three students – Ngoc Thao, Thanh Van, and Doan Trang – as they developed their graduation projects. The focus was not just on design aesthetics, but on crafting meaningful spaces that address contemporary social needs.
Each project reflected a thoughtful response to real-life challenges:
- “Artsy Club Library” by Doan Trang reimagined an empty building into a modern library and creative hub to nurture reading culture among youth.
- “Det Thoi – Red Lotus Stage” by Ngoc Thao gave new life to an existing structure, using lighting to honour and revitalise traditional Vietnamese performance arts.
- “Nhan Sinh Retreats” by Thanh Van proposed a healing space dedicated to rest, reflection, and emotional well-being.
All three designs addressed key societal themes: education, culture, and wellness. Through the lens of lighting design, which played a central role in shaping function and emotion in each space. Students were guided in balancing natural and artificial light, designing for specific activities, and integrating energy-conscious solutions to reduce light pollution and promote sustainability.
“Light is not simply a tool; it is a medium for meaning: In every space, the right lighting elevates experience, fosters connection, and reflects purpose.” Jonathan explained.

As a member of the Graduation Project Presentation Committee on 24 July 2024, Jonathan witnessed the evolution of each project: from concept to completion. The students’ work demonstrated creativity, rigour, and a growing awareness of how lighting influences spatial design. Committee members offered constructive insights that refined each project further, reinforcing the professional-level thinking required in today’s design industry.
Every presentation received constructive feedback from committee members on the final presentation
This collaboration is part of kobi lighting studio’s broader commitment to lighting education, particularly in supporting young designers involved in socially relevant projects. We believe in guiding students under real-world conditions, combining technical knowledge with a pedagogical and human-centred approach.
Through mentorship, we aim to inspire the next generation of Vietnamese designers, not only to master the technical aspects of lighting but to see it as a powerful tool for positive social change.

We extend our warmest congratulations to the students of Hoa Sen University. Their projects shine with purpose and promise, and we look forward to watching their light grow brighter in the years ahead.
